Environmental Science
The Western Irrigation District provides irrigation water to over 400 farms and 96,000 acres of land and supplies municipal water to over 12,000 people in four different communities through 1,100 km of canals and pipelines. Like other irrigation districts in Alberta, the WID operates under the rules and procedures of the Irrigation Districts Act. The WID is headquartered in Strathmore, Alberta, which is approximately 40 kilometres east of Calgary.
All work is performed in the field with significant time spent travelling from location to location throughout the boundaries of the District.
Job Duties:

Flow metering of canals and recording of water volumes using Acoustic Doppler flow meter technology

Flow metering of irrigation systems using GE Parametrics portable flow meter
-
Dissolved oxygen level sampling using YSI Professional Series ProSolo portable meter

Perform water quality sampling on behalf of Alberta Agriculture in the WID (collection of samples through to dropping samples at a laboratory)

Perform field water grabs, record and report on Veliger inspections on behalf of Alberta Agriculture

Inspect for, document and submit reports to the ongoing Alberta Invasive species monitoring program

GPS irrigation systems using Trimble GPS equipment

Site maintenance of district SCADA monitoring locations,

Maintenance of district wildlife habitat reclamation projects

Installation and maintenance as well as recording site information for ongoing biological aquatic weed control project testing

Data entry using Excel spreadsheet of information gathered in the field

Clean class 5 license required.
